With Respect and Gratitude to Berkin Elvan and All Those Who Lost Their Lives During Gezi Protests…

Sometimes you just cannot write, you just keep silent… A child with a beautiful heart tells you everything with a single glance of his. You look into his eyes and keep silent together holding hands. Hands that you have not met before would hold your hands and you become the warmest and greatest conscience. “Keeping silent” is to resist. Then, a silent scream rises from your silence.

And you, those who slaughtered our beautiful hearted children, cannot escape from this scream. They would choke you with the last breathe of theirs, the breathe of which you thought as “finished”. You would be ashamed of your humanity.

He just wanted to bring his home a loaf of bread as you were busy with plunder, robbery and pillage. As you were slaughtering the people marching on streets, he was in the hospital in his deathbed. As you were “making history” with your murders, he was resisting. He grew as you were killing.

And he waited. He waited for the days that you will be consumed; your dark order will be surfaced as you will not be able to fool people anymore. As we were waiting for him to wake-up he waited for the people to wake up. He was going on resisting as you diminished.

And on the day that you thought he died he stood up, and now is facing you embodied by millions…

You will not be able to get rid of him…

You will not be able to get rid of this glance…

Postscript: This caption is authored after it was announced that Berkin Elvan lost his life on 11 March 2014, Tuesday. On 16 June 2013, Sunday, as Gezi protests were going on, Berkin got shot by a Police gas canister on the head when he was trying to go to a local shop near his home to buy some bread for his family. He stayed in a coma for 269 days, resisted for survival and gave hope to whole of Turkey. Centre for Policy and Research on Turkey (Research Turkey) actively published numerous articles and letters from resistors regarding the protests that started following the infiltration of Istanbul Taksim Gezi Park by the construction machines with the purpose of demolishing the Park. We are embracing the latest “martyr” of the Gezi Resistance and wish him to rest in peace under eternal gleam. We are sending our sincere condolences to Berkin’s sorrowful family and wish them patience. We are embracing and wishing patience to all those who are crying for Berkin and to all those who each became a “Berkin” to eternise his memory and resistance, we are holding their hands tight.
