Synopsis of the Talk: Turkey’s Islamists have been in power since 2002, with the AK Party increasing its share of the vote in three successive general elections in 2002, 2007, and 2011. On the eve of the 2014 local elections to be held at the end of March 2014, as well as the presidential elections to be held in August, Dr. Özkan will discuss the successes and failures of Turkey’s Islamists over the past decade. The main argument of the talk will be as follows: Unlike the earlier generation of political elites who emerged at the end of the 1960s (who were ideologically committed to Islamism), AK Party elites have opportunistically used an Islamist ideology for their own political and economic interests. The past decade in Turkey has demonstrated the AK Party’s failure to escape from modernity; unable to create an alternative policy, it has instead synthesized Islamism with neoliberalism in order to remain in power.
Short Biography of Dr. Behlül Özkan: Dr. Behlül Özkan is a Lecturer in the Department of International Relations at Marmara University. He is the author of From the Abode of Islam to the Turkish Vatan: Making of a National Homeland in Turkey (Yale University Press, 2012). He also worked as a journalist at CNNTurk and Aljazeera.
