Synopsis of the talk

“From Euro-fatigue to Euro Denialism: Turkey- EU Relations in the Context of the Gezi ‘Event’”

The Gezi event has probably been the most significant headline of 2013 in Turkey. Millions occupied the streets and squares, annoyed by the violent reaction of the government and the police to a peaceful protest. Not surprisingly, the European Union which is still a significant anchor for Turkish politics was one of the curious observers of the process, raising eyebrows and highlighting the importance of promoting dialogue across the political spectrum and society more broadly and soothing political polarisation prevalent in the country. This paper aims to locate the Gezi event within the context of Turkey’s traumatic flirt with Europe and to reflect on the discursive and symbolic environment of the event. The concluding debate of the paper will be on the relationship between this environment and the de-Europeanisation debates in Turkish politics.
