Time:  6.30-8pm

Speaker: Dani Rodrik, Albert O. Hirschman Professor of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey; Centennial Professor at the LSE European Institute.

Chair: Prof Maurice Fraser, LSE

A massive court case against Turkish military officers relying on evidence that is now widely acknowledged to have been forged enabled prime minister Erdogan and his then ally, the Gülen movement, to consolidate their power over the secular old guard. Drawing on his personal connection with – and first-hand experience of – the case, Professor Rodrik shines a light on how an apparently democratizing society found itself in a wild frenzy where fact and fiction became virtually indistinguishable.
